Description

This exceptional pair of antique William IV sterling silver wick trimmers/snuffer has a hinged scissor action.

The anterior surface of these impressive candle wick trimmer scissors are embellished with cast and applied scrolling leaf ornamentation, accented with a floral rosette to the pivoting hinge.

The domed portion of the silver wick trimmer is further ornamented with gadroon style ornamentation and the plateaued side bears the contemporary bright cut engraved coat of arms* depicting an escutcheon of two bendlets, surmounted with a helm and crest of a dove, all above the motto 'Kynd Kynn Knawne Keepe' - Kind Friends Know and Keep.

The two fingerpieces are ornamented with reed decoration accented with scrolling motifs to the upper and lower portions.

The posterior surface is plain and unembellished, supported by three elongated rounded feet.

These exceptional trimmers are accompanied by the original sterling silver snuffer tray; this tray has a rectangular, rounded shaped form.

The surface of the tray is embellished with flat chased floral and scrolling leaf decoration, incorporating the aforementioned crest to the centre.

The raised rounded sides of the tray are encompassed with a paralleling applied scrolling leaf decorated border to the shaped rim.

Antique wick trimmers with matching trays are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.

The applied decoration is all very sharp and the bright cut engraved heraldry is very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the tray are clear in keeping with age and location.

The full hallmarks to the trimmer, in addition to the lion passant marks to the hinged blades and underside of the scissors are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of antique silverware.
