This exceptional antique sterling silver box has a plain oval form.

The sides of the body are embellished with an exceptional band of engraved stylised urn decoration amidst a geometric zig zag border, accented with leaf motifs and horizontal pales; this ornamentation continues to the sides of the cover.

The impressive hinged cover is embellished with blue enamel bordered lozenge pattern, alternating with green and red enamel quatrefoil motifs.

This lozenge ornamentation incorporates an exceptional blue enamel cartouche ornamented with two tied cornucopia below a winged insect; a cornucopia is also known as the 'horn of plenty', which is reflected with the abundance of fruit within the design.

The cover is further embellished with a green enamel border incorporating a husk festoon design accented with white enamel petal designs to each incurve.

The underside of the box is plain and unembellished.

This impressive antique silver and enamel box retains the original gilded interior.

By virtue of its size this versatile sterling silver box could be used for a multitude of functions, such as a pill box, table snuff box or trinket box.

This antique silver and enamel box is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

There is a minor flattening to the silver to the anterior portion of the body, in keeping with use; this facilitates the opening of the cover.

There is surface wear to the underside of the box, as to be expected in keeping with age and use.

The original gilding has some wear in keeping with age.

The bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp.

The enamel is in perfect condition.

Full British hallmarks struck to the rim of the box are all very clear.
