This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver cigarette case has a plain rectangular form with rounded corners.

This enamel cigarette case has a subtly curved form proffering a comfortable fit in the majority of pockets.

The anterior cover is embellished with an impressive vivid enamel panel depicting the male character 'John Jorrock'* above the elucidating engraved inscription 'The Handley Cross Fancy Ball'**.

The posterior cover and rounded sides of this cigarette case are plain and unembellished.

This hallmarked sterling silver cigarette case is fitted with a hallmarked push fit catch, which when released reveals two hinged compartments.

This impressive example of antique silverware features the original gilt interior and spring hinged retaining bars; the bars indicate the high quality of the piece.

Cases with such cultural enamel panels are rare to the market.

* John Jorrock was a character from the classic nineteenth century comic called 'Handley Cross'. The illustrations feature the adventures of John Jorrock who was a Cockney grocer.

** ‘The Handley Cross Fancy Ball’ is a famous illustration by John Leech depicting the scene portrayed in the works of the author R.S Surtees.

This antique cigarette case is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

There is some minor loss to the enamel of one finger, in keeping with age and use.

Full hallmarks struck to the interior of the case are all very clear; the hallmarks have been struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this impressive example of antique silverware.
