Description

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver box has a circular form.

The sides of this antique box is embellished with impressive chased decoration depicting cherub/putto* characters hanging floral swags within the clouds, accented with a simplified bat and owl design.

The hinged cover is ornamented with exceptional chased ornamentation displaying a nude female character with two further putto, all floating amidst the clouds amongst the moon and stars and entwined within flowing fabric swags.

The aforementioned frieze is flanked with plain silver gilt bands; the cover features a further band amidst protruding applied borders.

The interior and exterior surfaces of the silver box retain the original gilding.

This exceptional example of Victorian silverware is fitted to a leatherette presentation box, securing with a push fit catch.

The interior of the original presentation box features the retailer's mark 'Catchpole and Williams Ld (late C.J.Hill) 510. Oxford ST.W' below a coronet

This exceptional sterling silver gilt box is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire.

* In art and culture, a putto (plural: putti) is a chubby male child, usually nude and occasionally bearing wings.

Condition

This antique box is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The chased decoration is all very sharp.

There is some staining to the interior of the box, as to be expected in keeping with age and use.

Full hallmarks struck to the rim of the body and surface of the cover are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver, apart from the maker's mark to the body which is overstruck.

Reflections in photographs may detract from this fine example of antique silverware.
