William Comyns & Sons

The firm was established in 1859 by William Comyns, who apprenticed with George J. Richards. He purchased the premises of Robert Tagg (who had association with Rundell, Bridge & Co) in 2 Carlisle Street, Soho, London and entered his first mark.

Comyns moved to 1 Percy Mews, Rathbone Place, then to 16 Silver Street, Golden Square, Soho, and to Beak Street, Regent Street; obtaining a further premise at 54 Marshall Street, Soho in the early 1900s.

William’s sons Charles Harling Comyns and Richard Harling Comyns were partnered in 1885 and the firm entered the mark William Comyns & Son, where the family worked together to build their already established reputation and inventory. The Comyns high attention to detail and intricate designs enabled them to be retailed through the world’s finest retailers, including: Tiffany & Co, The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company and firms such as Henry Lewis and Howell & James of London.

William Comyns died in 1916 and though the sons faced difficulties through the First World War the business remained and they stayed as a partnership until the death of Charles in 1925. In 1930 the firm became the limited liability company William Comyns & Sons Ltd with Richard Comyns as the director.

In 1953 the company was purchased by Bernard Copping and operated as a manufacturing silversmith in London till 1987, with a premise at Comyns House, Tower Street, London, WC2.
