An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Georgian English Britannia standard silver mug; an addition to our 18th century collectable silverware collection

This exceptional antique George I Britannia* silver mug has a cylindrical form onto a circular spreading foot.


The surface of this antique George I silver mug is embellished with a contemporary engraved coat of arms above the inscription 'Henricus Davis, Seniorum Unus, 1718'**.


The upper rim of the body is encircled with applied moulded decoration.


The mug is fitted with an impressive S scroll handle incorporating a plain scrolling thumbpiece to the upper plateau.


This Britannia silver mug has a fine colour and patination***.


* Britannia Silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver).


** Henry Davies, Gentleman, was the surviving executor of Dame Margaret Boreman and the heir of his sister Elizabeth Gibbs (maiden name of Davies).


*** Patination or Patina is a subtle colouration or tarnish which forms on the surface of some metals, produced by oxidation or other chemical processes. A good patina proffers an aesthetically pleasing look.

This antique Britannia silver mug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and is in exceptional condition.

Full Britannia standard hallmarks struck to the surface of the mug have wear in keeping with age and location; the partial maker's mark is legible however remains untraced.


Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of Georgian silverware.
