Victorians were particularly fascinated with rubies, highly sought after due to their association with love, passion and strength. The gemstones association with devotion made it an ideal choice for romantic gift and was often paired with diamonds, symbolising enduring love, to create a sentimental engagement ring.

The Victorians used a range of metals and techniques within jewellery, though silver and coloured gold was the most favourable. Warm tones of yellow gold enhanced the rich colour of ruby gemstones, whilst silver settings provided a cooler contrast. During the romantic period, silver was considered just as valuable as gold, reserved for the wealthy upper class. Towards the end of the Victorian era platinum was used more due to technological advancements though yellow gold remained the most favourable till the Edwardian era.
Synthetic rubies, developed in 1837, were also popular during the Victorian era. Contrary to belief, the word "synthetic" does not mean fake when it comes to gemstones. A synthetic ruby has the same chemical composition as a natural ruby and an almost identical appearance to the naked eye.
