Bridgerton Jewellery Frequently Asked Questions

Bridgerton is set in the Regency era, which took place in England between 1811 and 1820. This period was apart of the Georgian era, a time well-known for its elegance and etiquette with many high society balls as seen in Bridgerton.

The jewellery in Bridgerton reflects the fashions of the time but also characters themselves. The first season’s diamond, Daphne Bridgerton, wears a lot of pearl jewellery, often associated with purity and innocence, as her character develops, her jewellery becomes more evolved. In contracts the Featherington family wears more flamboyant pieces, reflecting their desire to climb the social ladder and stand out to the rest of the ‘ton!

Diamond adorned choker necklaces, floral designs and pearls appear to be amongst the most popular jewellery pieces in Bridgerton. Spoiler alert, but Penelope Featherington’s pearl engagement ring marries delicate pearls with a floriated design set in antique gold makes the perfect Bridgerton engagement ring.

It’s worth noting that jewellery in the real-life Regency era was heavily influenced by various overlapping eras and cultures of the time! Not widely shown in hit Netflix series is the popularity of naturalist motifs in the ‘empire style’ between 1804 and 1815 which included symbols such as stars, bees, grape vines, oak leaves, animals and many more!

The Neoclassical era of 1760 to 1830 also overlapped with Regency era, prompting styles with Greco-Roman influences such as laurel wreaths, festoons, ribbon bows and navette or marquise shapes.

Whilst diamonds adorn the necks of Bridgerton, other gemstones were equally popular in the real regency era. Garnet, amethyst, coral, and turquoise were used to create eye-catching and vibrant looks with their rich hues.

Sentimental jewellery such as carved cameos, lockets and miniature portraits painted onto pendants and brooches were popular amongst romantics but is not widely seen in Bridgerton. The only character to sport such a piece is Marina Thompson, welcomed into her cousin’s home in the first season. Her pendant reflects the trend of the era, a small painting of her lover’s eye. The aptly named Lover’s Eye jewellery reveals to society that the wearer has a lover whilst also obscuring their identity, adding to the scandalous rumour mill of Bridgerton’s society!
