Five stone rings are a very popular choice for those interested in owning a statement piece that generates a lot of attention and admiration. Usually, five stone rings display diamonds or gemstones – sometimes both – in a graduated style across the finger, going from smaller stones on the outsides and larger ones toward the middle of the grouping. As may be expected, five stone rings are generally very impressive items; they also have many symbolic interpretations.
One such interpretation of five stone rings is that each stone is symbolic of a major stage in a romantic relationship. Following the patterns of a somewhat traditional romantic relationship, these stages are: friendship, courtship, dating, marriage, and children. A five stone ring is an excellent gift for a loved one at any stage of the relationship, and this symbolism can represent the future as well as the past achievements of a couple.
Another time to gift a five stone ring is a five-year anniversary. With diamonds being the traditional stone for engagement rings, it makes sense that a five stone diamond ring would be the perfect way of showing love that has flourished for five years.
Finally, five stone rings are frequently interpreted as a line, perhaps creating a connection or link between two people. This symbolism would make a five stone ring a wonderful gift for anyone, whether they are a romantic partner or a family member, as the stones represent the powerful bond between those two people, and suggests they will have an eternally close relationship.
These symbolic readings make these rings suitable for almost any stage of life. Wearing them as a wedding band is also an option, with many brides choosing to pair the ring with a simpler trilogy or solitaire engagement ring. They sit well with other rings, but also make a statement when worn alone.
Perhaps the most common five stone ring design style is the graduated ring, with the central stone being the largest. This style of ring is prominently set, often with metal claws allowing the gemstones to hold focus. Graduated rings are timelessly beautiful, with a style that suits every occasion.
The next most commonly-seen five stone ring setting is the straight setting. This design uses five stones that are all the same size in a horizontal linear formation. Sometimes, five stone rings in this style are referred to as half eternity rings, as with big enough gemstones, five stone rings can appear to go half way around the circumference of the finger. In many five stone rings, however, the carat weight of the stones involved is not high enough to cover the entire front of the finger.
Most five stone ring styles use the same gemstone across the spread of the ring. In some designs, however, a range of gemstone types are used to create patterns of colour across the ring. Sapphires are some of the most popular gemstones to use alongside diamonds, with emeralds being a close second.
A design only rarely seen in five stone rings is the twist design. Most often, this ring design style only features two stones. There are some examples, however, where a row of five gemstones is set on a diagonal in a twist style setting. Many five stone rings are used as engagement rings, worn alongside a wedding band. The twist five stone ring, however, is usually too imposing to act as an engagement ring, instead making a better cocktail ring.
