Sterling Silver Christening Bowl and Spoon by Asprey & Co Ltd - Antique George VI (1938)

£1,995.00

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique George VI English sterling silver Christening bowl and spoon set made by Asprey & Co Ltd - boxed; part of our diverse christening silverware collection

SKU C6197

This exceptional and rare antique George VI English sterling silver christening set consists of a bowl and spoon.

The impressive christening bowl has a circular rounded form, in the classic armada dish style.

The subtly convex well of this impressive antique silver bowl is embellished with an engraved scene depicting a female sat on a mound eating from a bowl; this iconic scene is associated to the classic nursery rhyme 'Little Miss Muffet'*.

The broad rim is segmented with bands of tooled decoration and bears the elucidating engraved inscription 'Little', 'Miss' and 'Muffet', alternating with illustrations extracted from the iconic story.

This exceptional set retains the original hallmarked sterling silver spoon.

The surface of the spoon is embellished with the engraved illustration of a seated female figure to the terminal and features a rat tail to the reverse of the bowl.

These examples of antique silverware are fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, securing with a push fit catch.

The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'Asprey, 166 Bond St, London'.

Each piece of this rare set was crafted by the renowned London silversmiths Asprey & Co Ltd, and the underside of the bowl bears the retailer's mark in addition to the signature of the renowned designer and maker R. E. Stone.

* This classic English nursery rhyme first appeared in print in 1805 and features a single verse 'Little Miss Muffet, sat on a tuffet, eating her curds and whey; There came a big spider, who sat down beside her and frightened Miss Muffet away'.

Date: 1938

This impressive antique silver bowl and spoon set is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The original box has some discolouration in keeping with age, but can be considered to be in presentation condition.

The engraved decoration is all very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the bowl and reverse of the spoon are very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique silverware.
