Elkington & Co. was a renowned silver manufacturer from Birmingham, England and often referenced as one of the most important 19th century silversmiths. The company exported silverware to various countries and gained international success and global presence.
The company was established in the 1830s by George Richards Elkington and his cousin, Henry Elkington; the company originally operated under the name G. R. Elkington & Co until, in 1842, Josiah Mason joined as a third partner, changing the firm’s name to Elkington, Mason, & Co. Mason's involvement ended within the partnership in 1861. From 1861 to 1963, the company operated independently under the name Elkington & Co. After this time the firm was acquired by British Silverware Ltd., which in 1971 became a subsidiary of Delta Metal Co. Ltd.
Throughout its history, Elkington & Co. have achieved remarkable success and they are known for being a leading producer of silver plating. In 1840 they patented the electroplating process, which enabled for a layer of silver on a base mental to create more affordable pieces to reach a far wider audience.
Whilst they may have the reputation of being involved with electroplating this did not deter the company from a commitment and reputation for high-quality craftsmanship for solid silver items. Elkington & Co were inspired by historical styles such as Renaissance and Rococo which set trends and decorative pieces to the 19th century. Their attention to detail and intricate designs were indications of the high quality of the work, which was significantly acknowledged by royalty and celebrities of the time, including the monarch Queen Victorian who commissioned household items; this aided their already increasing reputation. One of the further main high points of their career was obtaining an Imperial and Royal Warrant of Appointment from the emperor of Austria.
