Sterling Silver, Steel and Horn Carving Set - Antique Victorian (1898)

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver mounted and horn handled carving set consists of two carving knives, two carving forks and a sharpening steel.

The plain steel blades of the carving knives have a sabre style, broad incurved shaped form, incorporating the maker's mark 'James Deakin & Sons, Sheffield' to the anterior surface.

The pieces of this antique carving set are fitted with fine and impressive horn handles featuring impressive hallmarked sterling silver embossed floral and scrolling foliate decorated terminals.

The decoration to each terminal incorporates a vacant shaped cartouche to each side.

All the components of this antique carving set retain the original hallmarked sterling silver ferrules ornamented with further embossed decoration, identical to that of the terminals.

Each ferrule and terminal features an embossed registration mark amidst the hallmarks; the carving forks feature a registration mark to the hinged portion of the steel blades.

This antique carving set is fitted to the fine and impressive hinged leatherette presentation box, featuring a velvet and satin lined interior and securing with a push fit catch.

The interior of the box features the retailer's mark 'Cutlers & Silversmiths, McPherson Bros, Argyle ST, Glasgow'.

The components of this exceptional set were assayed in Sheffield, England in 1898; these pieces will have been crafted in the same year but due to the hallmarking system the large carving knife is struck with the date letter 'e' and the others bear 'f'.

This antique carving set is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

There are some minor surface blemishes to the steel blades as to be expected in keeping with age, but can be considered to be in excellent presentation condition.

The embossed decoration is sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each ferrule and terminal are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these fine examples of Victorian silverware.
