Founded in 1960 by Björn Weckström, a Finnish sculptor and jewellery designer.

Lapponia Jewellery gained popularity immediately due to its distinctive and sculptural shapes. Weckström frequently used strong geometric patterns and organic forms in his jewellery.

Rising to fame in 1977 when Princess Leia wore a piece of the jewellery in the Star Wars film. Weckström created the necklace, which is known as the Planetoid Valleys necklace. The necklace rose to fame and helped bring Lapponia Jewellery into the public eye on a global scale.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s the company expanded its range of products, selling jewellery in other countries. In 1990 the company began to experiment with new designs which was launched as a new product line known as Art by Lapponia.

In 2005 Lapponia Jewellery was acquired by Kalevala Jewelry, a Finnish jewellery brand owned by Kalevala Koru Oy. Today Kalevala Jewelry and Lapponia Jewellery are merged into the new Kalevala brand.
