Victorian clock

Over the centuries, there have been many different variations of antique timepieces. These vary from early sundials, to water clocks, to the mechanical timepieces that we use today.

Desk clocks are one of many variations of ‘traditional clocks’. These were made in large numbers throughout the second half of the 19th century. Many desk clocks took the form of miniature carriage clocks. These featured hinged carrying handles, and were known for being practical and sturdy. Desk clocks, however, were much smaller. They measured around 3 and a half inches from top to bottom.

The design and decoration of desk clocks varied from piece to piece. Most were simple in these aspects; however others were enhanced with enamelling or featured additional materials such as hardstone or tortoiseshell.

A popular design of desk clock consisted of a large, silver mounted box containing a pocket watch. The box was usually rectangular, and made from wood and leather. The silver mount was often ornately pierced and stamped with foliage, birds and masks. This created an impressive effect with a relatively small amount of silver. Edwardian examples of these desk clocks are often much more simple and plain.

At AC Silver we are able to offer our customers a wonderful array of clocks and antique time pieces, varying from miniature clocks to grand timepieces, and all of which are the finest of their type that we have discovered.
