Sterling Silver Travelling Collapsible Beaker - Antique Victorian

£3,950.00

A fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver collapsible beaker with royal interest - boxed; an addition to our Victorian silverware collection

SKU C8660

This impressive antique Victorian sterling silver collapsible beaker has a circular tapering form.

The surface of the silver beaker is embellished with impressive engine turned decoration, incorporating hallmarks to each concentric section.

The decoration to the upper segment bears a circular cartouche ornamented with an engraved royal coronet above the inscription 'Alfred, 6th Augt 1859'.

The underside of the beaker bears the engraved inscription 'Presented by Her Royal & Imperial Highness, The Duchess of Saxe Coburg & Gotha, Duchess of Edinburgh, to Alleyne Alfred Baron Boxall in memory of His Royal Highness The late Duke Alfred, Son of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, February 3rd 1901'.

The interior of the beaker retains the original gilt interior.

This Victorian silver collapsible beaker is fitted to the original and impressive hinged velvet and satin lined travelling case, securing with a push fit catch.

Such examples in their original box are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.

Maker: Brownett & Rose (Abraham Brownett & John Rose)

Date: 1859

This Victorian travelling beaker is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The engine turned decoration is all very crisp, despite the concentric collapsing nature of the beaker.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the upper segment and interior of the base, in addition to part hallmarks to the surface of each further concentric segment are all clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware.
