An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Georgian Newcastle sterling silver meat skewer/letter opener; an addition to our diverse 18th century flatware collection

SKU C6801

This antique Georgian sterling silver meat skewer/letter opener* has a tapered form.

The surface of this antique 18th century meat skewer is embellished with the contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting out of a naval crown an eagle with wings extended, holding in the beak a wheat stalk.

The reverse surface is plain and unembellished apart from the featured hallmarks.

This exceptional example of silver flatware was crafted by the renowned Newcastle silversmith John Langlands I.

* The original use of this item was purely as a meat skewer. Due to its form, this piece may certainly be used as an effective letter opener.

This antique 18th century meat skewer is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The piece bears surface marks as to be expected, in keeping with age and use.

The hallmarks struck to the reverse surface are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

The lion passant hallmark has wear in keeping with age but remains legible.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of silverware.
