Chinese Silver Tobacco Box - Antique Circa 1900

£1,895.00

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Chinese silver tobacco box; an addition to our Chinese silverware collection

SKU C9633

This exceptional antique Chinese silver tobacco box has a circular rounded form.

The surface of this antique silver box is embellished with impressive chased chrysanthemum flower decoration, all on a matte ground.

The sides of the box are plain and unembellished.

This silver tobacco box retains the original sprung flush hinged hallmarked subtly convex cover, which opens by applying gentle pressure to each side.

The cover is ornamented with a continuation of floral decoration.

The hallmarks struck to the interior of this highly desirable box include:

Maker's mark: WH (Wang Hing & Company)

Silver quality/purity mark: 97 (97 standard, 970/1000)*

Character mark: Untraced

This round Chinese silver tobacco box by Wang Hing and Co is a highly collectible piece, showcasing the craftsmanship of one of the most respected Chinese silversmiths of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Originally used to store loose tobacco, cigars or cigarettes, it serves equally well today as a decorative desk or table object, with strong appeal for collectors of export silver and historically significant pieces.

* Higher silver purity, 97% in comparison to the more traditional 90 or 85 standard, increases malleability, reducing resistance during working and chasing, allowing for finer detail execution. Furthermore, the higher purity of silver indicates the high quality of the piece.

Date: Circa 1900

Origin: China

This antique Chinese silver tobacco box is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The chased decoration is very sharp.

The Chinese hallmarks struck to the interior of the box are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of Victorian silverware.
