Sterling Silver and Tortoiseshell Capstan Inkwell - Antique Edwardian

£995.00

A fine, impressive and unusual antique Edwardian English sterling silver and tortoiseshell capstan inkwell with maritime interest; an addition to our ornamental silverware collection

SKU A3962

This fine antique Edwardian sterling silver capstan inkwell has a plain circular capstan* form.

The surface of this unusual capstan inkwell is plain and unembellished.

This antique inkwell is fitted with a hallmarked hinged cover incorporating an impressive tortoiseshell panel ornamented with unusual piqué work depicting the White Star liner 'Pittsburg'**.

The base is weighted as to be expected and retains the original leatherette to the underside.

* A capstan is a revolving waisted cylindrical component of nautical machinery used to wind rope and/or cables.

** The Pittsburgh was built in Belfast in 1913 and didn't start service till 1922 where her main voyages were between Liverpool and Boston. In 1926 she was renamed and refitted as the Red Star liner 'Pennland' used for troop transport. She sank in 1941 during a German air raid.

Maker: Collett & Anderson

Date: 1901

This antique inkwell is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in exceptional condition.

The inkwell has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition.

The tortoiseshell is in perfect condition.

The pique decoration is very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface and part hallmarks to the cover are all very clear; due to the location on the body, the maker's mark was not deeply struck and as a result has worn.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of Edwardian silverware.

Diameter of base 7.1cm/2.8"

Diameter of cover 4cm/1.6"
